January 27th - Day of Commemoration for Those Fallen for the Fatherland

The draft law on making amendments to the law on "Holidays and Commemorative Days of the Republic of Armenia" was adopted in the second reading and in full, authored by National Assembly members Ruben Rubinyan and Gegham Nazaryan. They have proposed to designate January 27th as the Day of Commemoration for Those Fallen for the Fatherland.

According to Ruben Rubinyan, the law will come into force immediately, rather than ten days after its official publication. January 27th will be a non-working day.

Among the drafts accepted in the first reading is a proposal to amend Article 37 of the law on "Preservation and Use of Immovable Historical and Cultural Monuments and Historical Environment," which aims to prohibit the alienation of monuments without government approval. According to co-author of the draft and MP from the "Civil Contract" faction Taguhi Ghazaryan, if a building that is a monument belonging to the Church is being alienated, changing ownership, or donated, the government’s consent is mandatory for that process. The government may refuse this consent and reject the proposal to change ownership if there is a risk of using the property for non-public and non-appropriate purposes, if the terms of the transaction contradict public interests, or if the attached documents are false and distorted.

The draft was passed with 67 votes in favor, 24 against, and 2 abstentions.
