A Japanese Woman Married ChatGPT
A 32-year-old woman in Japan held a symbolic wedding ceremony with a virtual character created in ChatGPT. According to VC reports, the event was broadcast on local television and extensively covered by media outlets.
According to Kano, her interactions with a virtual conversation partner named Klaus began in 2024, during a difficult emotional period following the dissolution of her engagement. In June 2025, the artificial intelligence reportedly suggested changing the format of their communication, which Kano interpreted as a marriage proposal.
Kano noted that the chatbot became a source of psychological support, helping her overcome personal difficulties and issues related to infertility. The ceremony has no legal validity and was organized by an agency specializing in non-traditional weddings.
During the event, Kano and the virtual Klaus exchanged rings, made vows, and posed for photos, with Klaus's image added in post-production. It is mentioned that this is not the first case in Japan; in September 2025, a Japanese man held a similar ceremony with a chatbot from the Loverse app.
