European Parliament Decides to Fully Abandon Russian Gas
The European Parliament is discussing proposals to move the deadline for completely abandoning imports of Russian gas from 2028 to January 1, 2027. This was reported by the Reuters agency.
The initiative was introduced by MEPs Inez Weidner and Ville Niinistö. Despite the fact that many EU member states are unlikely to support an accelerated timeline, the lawmakers have noted that this situation can be used as leverage for concessions in negotiations.
Additionally, the MEPs propose to penalize companies that violate the ban, and by 2027, the import of Russian oil should be completely prohibited. A vote on this matter in Parliament is expected in the autumn.
