Georgia May Be Deprived of EU Membership Opportunity for a Long Time, Ambassador
Georgia may remain deprived of the opportunity to join the European Union for a long time, said Pavel Gertsinski, EU ambassador in Tbilisi, during a press briefing.
“In 2023, the European Union opened the doors of the European family to Georgia, and Georgia became a candidate for EU membership. We celebrated that historic moment together. Today, Georgia's euro-integration is stalled. It is regrettable that Georgia may lose its historic opportunity to become a member of the European Union for a long time. Moreover, democracy in Georgia is under threat,” the EU ambassador asserted.
The European diplomat noted that the issue of Georgia may also be discussed at the EU foreign ministers' meeting on June 23.
It is worth recalling that the relations between official Tbilisi and the EU deteriorated when Georgia adopted the “Foreign Agents” law to regulate its internal affairs, a move that was not well received by the West and the United States.
