Landslides in Brazil Result in Fatalities
At least nine people have lost their lives due to landslides in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, with one person reported missing. This was reported by CNN Brasil, citing the state fire department.
An emergency state has been declared in Minas Gerais for 180 days. Heavy rains struck the region on the night of January 12, causing the landslides which severely impacted the municipality of Ipatinga, home to over 220,000 residents. All of the deceased were residents of Ipatinga, and as a result of the destruction, 150 people have been left homeless, the network reports.
CNN Brasil reports that the state's governor, Romeu Zema, plans to visit Ipatinga on January 13 to assess the extent of the devastation and the necessary aid needed.
In the spring of 2024, Brazil was significantly affected by torrential rains and floods, which claimed more than 180 lives in the south of the country. The region suffered substantial material damage.
