IAEA Lacks Sufficient Evidence to Identify Perpetrators of Attacks on Kursk Nuclear Power Plant
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has stated that he cannot identify the perpetrators of the attacks on the Kursk nuclear power plant, as he seeks to independently verify the facts related to nuclear safety incidents and does not want to politicize the situation in the absence of irrefutable evidence. Grossi made this remark in an interview with Al Arabiya television.
According to him, IAEA experts have gone to assess the threats at the Kursk nuclear power plant in response to reports of attacks received from Russian authorities. Grossi emphasized that in order to carry out their mission of protecting nuclear safety, they need to be on the ground and ascertain the facts. He noted that for the sake of neutrality and accuracy, the agency confirms information about attacks only when it can independently assess the information.
The IAEA leader also acknowledged that the conflicting party, where endangered nuclear facilities are located, has the right to request accountability from the international nuclear regulatory body for violations of nuclear safety. At the same time, Grossi assured that the agency would never conceal from the public the facts of intentional attacks on nuclear plants if it has irrefutable evidence at its disposal.
