The Earth is Living Through Extreme Magnetic Storms for the Second Day
The Earth is experiencing its largest storm in the last 20 years and the third largest in the entire history of observations. This was reported by Levon Azizyan, the director of the Hydro-Meteorology and Monitoring Center.
“This magnetic storm is raging in waves; after slightly subsiding just after noon yesterday, from extremely strong it has regained its previous power. The storm has been recognized not only as the largest of the last 20 years but also the second most powerful in the 21st century.
The speed of solar wind remains unusually high, reaching up to 1000 km/s, which is almost three times greater than average. The intensity of the magnetic storm is also evidenced by the fact that even the Northern Lights were admired as far as Africa and the Mediterranean Sea yesterday.
Due to the strong geomagnetic storms, flights from Qatar and Emirates airlines to the U.S. West Coast are being rerouted about two days south from their usual transpolar routes.
The sun has not calmed down either, as an X5.8 magnitude eruption occurred yesterday, marking the second most powerful in the last 7 years. Accumulations of sunspots, which are erupting with powerful outbursts, continue to grow and are now already 17 times larger than the Earth’s diameter.
According to the forecasts of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Earth’s magnetic field will not calm down until the evening hours of May 13,” he noted.
