Germany and the U.S. Currently Oppose Ukraine's NATO Membership
During the upcoming summit in Washington in 2024, Ukraine's partners are striving for NATO to officially invite Kyiv to become a member of the alliance. However, the U.S. and Germany are currently opposed to this proposal, according to the magazine 'Foreign Policy,' which cited its sources.
Ukraine's Eastern European partners, already members of the alliance, are eager for the invitation to come as soon as possible, but Washington and Berlin are cautious about the suggestion, showing 'serious behind-the-scenes resistance.' The article also notes that France is prepared to extend an official invitation to Kyiv.
The other NATO members, primarily the U.S. and Germany, believe that it is still premature to begin the process of integrating Ukraine into the alliance while Russia’s war of aggression is ongoing. Authorities from both countries insist that Ukraine should eventually join the alliance, but they stress that now is not the time to initiate this process. They highlight the need to focus on the continuity of arms supplies to Ukraine in the near future.
