Armenians Left Nagorno-Karabakh Due to EU Inaction, Says MEP
I think it is terrible that the European Union is effectively accepting Aliyev's actions. This was stated by Anja Hazekamp, a member of the European Parliament from the Netherlands, in an interview with Alpha News.
“It seems to me that the Armenian issue and the Armenian situation is not particularly known or understood by all members of Parliament, and we need to make sure that they are aware of the situation, and it is great that you are here and constantly paying attention to these issues. Continue to do so, because if there is no attention to the situation in Armenia, there will be no actions against Azerbaijan. We must continue the struggle; that is all we can do,” she concluded.
She added that there is a group of MEPs who, like her, are fighting for a solution to this issue, but there are still many deputies who think that an agreement with Azerbaijan is not such a big problem.
“It is necessary to break the gas agreement. Additionally, it has been decided to hold the next UN Climate Change summit in Azerbaijan, and the EU must oppose this. President Aliyev, who has declared himself as an aggressor, should not become the leader of the summit. I think it is important for the European Commission to openly oppose this, but they are not doing so, and our role, as European Parliament members, is to constantly talk about what they should do. I will continuously ask questions, propose resolutions, and keep bringing attention to these issues. Unfortunately, to this day, the European Commission has really done nothing, but I will not rest and I will fight for Armenia,” said Hazekamp.
According to her, the EU should not accept these actions and should take a stance, indicating to Azerbaijan that it has gone too far.
“People have left Nagorno-Karabakh because the EU has done nothing. We now see that the EU has a memorandum of understanding with Azerbaijan and a gas agreement, and I have several times appealed to the European Commission, demanding an end to this memorandum, because by accepting the agreement with Azerbaijan, the EU is effectively endorsing Azerbaijan's actions,” the MEP emphasized.
