Results of the Georgian Parliament Vote to Impeach the President Revealed
The Georgian Parliament has failed to impeach President Salome Zurabishvili, as revealed by the results of a vote held in the parliament, reported by the TASS agency.
It was previously reported that the Constitutional Court of Georgia had ruled that President Salome Zurabishvili violated the country’s Constitution.
At least 100 members of parliament must support the impeachment decision. Considering that nearly all opposition members have pledged to vote against it, the ruling party is likely unable to remove Zurabishvili from office.
The ruling party, “Georgian Dream,” claims that the president breached the Constitution by traveling abroad without the government’s permission. According to Article 52 of the Constitution of Georgia, the president “conducts representative powers in foreign relations with the consent of the government and negotiates with foreign countries and international organizations.” Zurabishvili has notably met with the leaders of Germany, France, and the European Council.
