State Department Responds to Politico Report on Possible Azerbaijani Incursion into Armenia
The U.S. Department of State has responded to a query from the Armenian service of "Voice of America" regarding a publication in Politico titled "Blinken Warns Lawmakers That Azerbaijan Could Invade Armenia in Coming Weeks." In its reply, the State Department emphasized that "the United States continues to engage with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the highest levels, striving for a dignified and lasting peace, where the rights of all are respected. The use of force is unacceptable, and direct dialogue is crucial for resolving this longstanding conflict," the Department's response stated.
The U.S. foreign affairs agency also noted that "the U.S. supports the efforts of the Armenian government to provide assistance and comfort to displaced persons in Armenia in close cooperation with humanitarian organizations. We express our condolences to the displaced, recognizing the shock and trauma they are experiencing and the uncertainty they face."
The State Department added that Baku bears the responsibility for protecting civilians and ensuring humane treatment for all, including those suspected of participating in military actions. "Azerbaijan is also responsible for ensuring that its [armed] forces comply with international law, including international humanitarian law, which governs the conduct of military operations, the protection of civilians, and the humane treatment of participants in military operations," the State Department's response to the Armenian service of "Voice of America" stated.
