VIDEO: At Least 8 High-Rise Buildings Collapse in Northern India Due to Landslide
In Kullu city of Himachal Pradesh, northern India, at least eight high-rise residential and administrative buildings have collapsed due to a powerful landslide caused by monsoon rains. More buildings have also been damaged.
The Times of India reports that human casualties were avoided thanks to the timely evacuation of residents and staff from emergency shelters. The evacuations took place 3-4 days ago when cracks began to appear in the buildings.
According to officials in Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall, landslides, and flooding have led to the collapse of more than 2,000 homes in the state, with over 340 people reported dead as a result of the natural disaster. The damage in the affected areas is estimated at around $1 billion.
