Current Armenia-EU Relations Do Not Contradict Armenia’s Obligations in the EAEU, Says Pashinyan

Armenia understands that it is impossible to be a member of both the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union simultaneously. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

He reminded that in 2025, Armenia adopted a law on the start of the EU membership process, noting that its strategic goal is to create alternatives for Armenia.

Pashinyan emphasized that the adoption of the law does not mean that Armenia has the opportunity to become an EU member today. Even with necessary preparedness, it will require the approval of the EU member states and the consent of the Armenian citizens for membership.

The Prime Minister indicated that until then, Armenia must go through an institutional preparation phase, officially apply to the EU, and obtain candidate status.

According to him, without passing at least most of these phases, the referendum on EU membership would be devoid of substance, as citizens would be offered a choice between two alternatives, one of which does not currently exist.

“It would be disrespectful to our people and practically illegitimate,” Pashinyan stated.
