Niger's Military Announces Ousting of President and Border Closures

Niger's military has announced that President Mohamed Bazoum has been removed from power, and the country's borders are closed effective immediately. This was reported by Reuters, referencing a statement made by the military on national television.

Colonel Amadou Abdramane stated that the defense and security forces have decided to "put an end to the regime," noting that the security situation has deteriorated and governance has been significantly poor.

According to him, Niger's borders are now closed, a nationwide curfew has been declared, and all institutions in the country have ceased operations.

Local portal Jeune Afrique, citing its sources, reports that the current president has been arrested by members of the presidential guard at his residence. The day before, it was disclosed that parts of the presidential guard had effectively "blocked Mohamed Bazoum in his palace." Subsequently, the presidential office announced that Niger's military did not support the uprising by the leader’s bodyguards and that Bazoum and his family were doing well.
