The Situation Around Karabakh Is Developing Along a Negative Scenario: Announcement from the Russian Foreign Ministry

Russia is ready to organize a tripartite meeting of foreign ministers regarding Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement in the near future, the Russian Foreign Ministry has announced.

The agency has made several statements regarding the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“In the summits held under the auspices of the European Union in October 2022 and May 2023, Armenia recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan. We respect the sovereign decision of the Armenian leadership, but this fundamentally changed the basic conditions under which the statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia of November 9, 2020 was signed, as well as the positioning of the Russian peacekeeping contingent,” the statement reads.

“We believe that under these conditions, the fate of the Armenian population of Karabakh should not be transferred to third countries. It is necessary to urgently begin preparations for a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan, based on previously reached agreements,” it continues.

“It is worrying that the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh is developing along a negative scenario. The humanitarian crisis in the region is deepening. The local population is experiencing an acute shortage of food, medicine, and essential goods, and is practically deprived of electricity and gas. This could lead to dramatic consequences for the Armenian population of Karabakh,” states the announcement.

The Russian side calls on the leadership of Azerbaijan to take urgent measures to unblock the Lachin corridor, to ensure the unimpeded movement of citizens, vehicles, and goods in both directions, and to supply energy resources to the region.
