Erdogan and Biden Meet in Vilnius

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday during the NATO summit, but did not provide details about the deal concerning Sweden's NATO membership, reports the Associated Press.

While Biden referenced the "agreement you secured yesterday," Erdogan said nothing about it. Media outlets have noted that Turkey was the main obstacle to Sweden joining the alliance, but on Monday evening NATO announced that Erdogan had agreed to send the matter to his country’s parliament.

This was a notable omission by Erdogan, who did not publicly comment on the issue during the summit. However, Erdogan seems eager to develop his relationship with Biden. He stated that previous meetings were “just warming up, but now we are starting a new process,” according to the Associated Press.

In reference to next year’s presidential elections, Erdogan told Biden that he “would like to take this opportunity to wish you success.” Biden responded, “I look forward to seeing you over the next five years.”
