New Curriculum Fully Retains Church History: Andreasyan
The church is concerned that the lack of a separate subject in schools may jeopardize important knowledge and values, while from an educational perspective, this anxiety does not exist. The new curriculum fully retains knowledge about religion and church history, even without having a separate subject. This was stated by Zhanna Andreasyan during discussions on the 2022 budget execution report at the National Assembly.
The Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports highlighted that knowledge regarding church history and its role in the life of the Armenian people is integrated into history lessons, while information about religious beliefs is covered in social studies classes. “Moreover, if you look at the subject 'Me and My Homeland' for grades 5-6 (which is called 'Social Studies' in higher grades), there are very important insights regarding our rituals and celebrations that we also strive to make applicable and value-based, as well as a foundation for education. Here, it is written about how to celebrate certain holidays and rituals, for instance, how to mark Barekendan,” the minister stated. It is reminded that, by the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, 'History of the Armenian Church' will not be a separate subject but will be included in the textbook for 'History of Armenia'.
