Former President of Brazil Found Guilty in Corruption Case

The Supreme Court of Brazil has found former president (1990-1992) and senator Fernando Collor de Mello guilty of passive corruption and money laundering during the years 2010-2014. This was reported by Ria.ru.

"The plenary session of the Federal Supreme Court... has convicted former senator Fernando Collor de Mello for crimes related to BR Distribuidora (the fuel sales subsidiary of Petrobras). The court found it proven that the former parliamentarian, with the help of businessmen Luis Pereira Duarte de Amorim and Pedro Paulo Bergamaschi de Leoni Ramos, received 20 million reais for signing an illegal deal between the state company and UTC Engenharia," the information posted on the court's website stated.

In addition to the initial charges of passive corruption and money laundering, the accusation of collusion in the criminal transaction has been added. The verdict will be announced on May 31.

Reporting judge Edson Fachin has requested a sentence of 33 years in prison for the defendant, along with fines and compensation payments, seizure of property related to the crime, and a ban on holding public office.
