Armenia Appoints New Ambassadors to Hungary and Moldova

After a long hiatus of nearly 11 years, Armenia has appointed an ambassador to Hungary once again.

According to a decree signed by the President of Armenia, Ashot Smbatyan, the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Georgia, has been appointed as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Hungary (with residence in Tbilisi).

In another decree, Vladimir Karapetyan, the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to Ukraine, has been appointed as the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to the Republic of Moldova (with residence in Kyiv).

It should be noted that diplomatic relations between Armenia and Hungary were frozen in 2012 when Hungary extradited Azerbaijani Ramil Safarov, who had killed an Armenian officer while asleep in Budapest, to Azerbaijan. Safarov had been sentenced to life imprisonment, but Ilham Aliyev pardoned him and raised his rank.

The ice in relations between the two countries melted when, in December 2021, 5 Armenian prisoners of war returned home thanks to the efforts of Hungary. Representatives of the Hungarian authorities personally went to Baku and returned to Yerevan with the 5 prisoners.

It was reminded that on December 7, 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, mentioned that ambassadors would be appointed by both countries in the near future.

The newly appointed ambassador of Hungary to Armenia is Anna Maria Shikon, who will also be based in Tbilisi.
