Underpass Near ‘Fish Shop’ to Be Converted into Parking Lot
One of the underpasses on Mashtots Avenue, located next to the ‘Fish Shop,’ is set to be transformed into an underground parking facility by the Yerevan Municipality, prompting outrage from local residents who had hoped the underpass would become a new commercial center similar to the passage constructed by ‘Tashir’ at the Aram-Buzand-Mashtots intersection.
The parking lot is deemed unnecessary for several reasons. Firstly, there are no administrative buildings in the area to support its need. Secondly, it would create additional complications for the residents. Most importantly, a new commercial hub in this area could invigorate local commerce.
Taron Gevorgyan, an employee of the Public Relations Department of the Yerevan Municipality, confirmed the news in an interview with the ‘Hayrapet’ newspaper, stating: “Yes, we are currently developing such a project, which will be ready by June. We plan to turn the neglected underpass adjacent to the fish shop into a parking lot. Most likely, we will also have a commercial space there, like a shop or supermarket. The underpass is intended to be renovated both as a parking facility and as a safe passage for pedestrians, while also providing certain services to citizens.”
