Vote of No Confidence Against French Government Proposed in Parliament
Members of the LIOT opposition group in the French parliament have proposed a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne's government. This was reported on Friday by BFMTV.
A petition presented by a group of deputies led by Bertrand Pancher has been signed by 91 out of 577 members of the French lower house (National Assembly), which has the same number of representatives. A total of 287 votes are required for the motion of no confidence to pass; this figure is quite reachable with the alignment of political forces.
“I call on all deputies to take responsibility for defending our democracy,” Pancher urged his fellow lawmakers.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron decided to accept a bill raising the retirement age without putting it to a vote in the lower house of parliament. He convened a Council of Ministers to utilize a constitutional tool that allows this action.
In recent months, the country has seen mass protests against pension reforms, which were intensified the previous night. Marine Le Pen has called on Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne to resign from her position.
