Video: North Korea Launches Long-Range Ballistic Missile Ahead of South Korea-Japan Leaders Meeting
Today, Pyongyang has launched a long-range ballistic missile that flew approximately 1000 km. According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Republic of Korea, the missile was fired at a steep angle from the Sunan district of Pyongyang towards the Sea of Japan, at around 07:10 local time (02:10 Yerevan time).
The National Security Council of the Republic of Korea has decided to hold a meeting in connection with the launch. In Tokyo, it is believed that this was an intercontinental ballistic missile. This is reported by Armenpress, referencing the Yonhap agency.
The White House has stated that the launch conducted by North Korea does not pose an immediate threat to the U.S. or its allies, but it increases the risk of destabilization in the region.
Today, discussions are scheduled in Tokyo between South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Yonhap notes that North Korea's nuclear and missile threats are likely to take center stage in the agenda.
The "Freedom Shield" joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea began on March 13, to which North Korea has responded by launching various long-range missiles in recent days.
