Horrific Traffic Accident in Yerevan: One Iranian Pedestrian Dead, Another Injured
Late last night, a deadly traffic accident occurred in Yerevan. Ara Khachatryan, 40, while driving his Toyota with license plate 77 SQ 777, struck pedestrians on a section of the road from the Khachyan Tunnel to the Hrazdan Tunnel, in front of address 7 on Khachatryan Street. The victims were Iranian citizens, Ahmad Askari, 47, and Sedid Moradpour, 31.
According to photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan, the impact caused one of the victims to be thrown into the opposing traffic lane, colliding with a BMW X5, driven by 41-year-old Armen Musheghyan, having the license plate 05 PP 001.
As a result of the accident, A. Askari died at the scene, while S. Moradpour sustained injuries and was transported by Yerevan resident Garegin Stepanyan in his personal Toyota to the number 1 university hospital. The hospital later reported that, fortunately, Moradpour's life is not in danger, primarily thanks to Stepanyan, who promptly got the injured man to the hospital.
The police cordoned off the area, temporarily halting traffic on the stretch from the beginning of the Khachatryan Tunnel to the circus.
At the scene, while investigators and police attempted to take the driver of the BMW X5 to the hospital to determine his sobriety level, a man identifying himself as a lawyer prevented them from transporting him with police vehicles, stating that the driver would only go to the hospital in his own car. Another man was also trying to obstruct the work of the police and investigators, claiming, "The BMW X5 driver is my brother; I will decide what happens. "
Ultimately, both drivers underwent sobriety tests, revealing that the BMW X5 driver was intoxicated. Shamshyan's reports indicate that the driver of the Toyota, who transported the injured man to the hospital, was photographed by speed cameras, although his actions were not intentional; he was attempting to save a citizen's life, which was reiterated multiple times at the hospital.
