EU Puts Russia in a Bind: ‘Putin Will Be Forced to Choose’
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, published an article discussing the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia and the likelihood that they could help halt the war in Ukraine.
The European Union has adopted six packages of sanctions aimed at punishing Russia for violating international law by invading Ukraine. According to Borrell, the sanctions are gradually freeing Europe from its long-standing dependency, which has obstructed its political choices in the face of Vladimir Putin's aggression.
He highlighted that by the end of 2022, the EU aims to reduce imports of Russian oil by 90%.
“Sanctions will force Putin to choose—oil or weapons,” Borrell stated.
