VIDEO: There Are Arrests; Investigative Committee on Incident at Proshyan-Demirchyan Intersection
The Investigative Committee of Armenia has opened a criminal case concerning the mass riots that occurred during a gathering organized by the political opposition movement 'Resistance' on June 3, 2022, on Proshyan Street in Yerevan. Investigative and procedural actions are underway to clarify all circumstances of the incident.
“During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that at the time of the gathering, under the organization and direction of the leaders of the 'Resistance' movement, participants attempted to break through the police cordon at the Proshyan-Demirchyan intersection and proceed towards Demirchyan Street, heading towards the National Assembly of Armenia. Immediately after those calls, around 20:30, the participants of the gathering, disobeying the legal demands of the police, began to engage in mass riots, using stones, metal rods, bottles, and other objects to strike them, exercising violence against the law enforcement officers and attempting to breach the police barrier, thus endangering public safety.
As a result of the actions of the participants in the mass riots, over forty police officers sustained varying degrees of bodily injuries, some of whom are currently receiving inpatient treatment. The activities of the participants in the mass disturbances were halted and disrupted due to the intervention of the police forces on duty at the scene.
During the examination of the scene, numerous stones, metal and wooden rods, glass and plastic bottles, torn pieces of police uniforms, ripped epaulettes, and other items were discovered and seized. A criminal case has been initiated regarding the organization and participation in mass disturbances under Article 225 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. As of now, 13 individuals have been arrested. The investigation is ongoing,” stated the Investigative Committee in their announcement.
