The Most Acute Phase of the Pandemic is Approaching its End: Bloomberg
A study by South African scientists has shown that the emergence of the Omicron variant signifies that the most acute phase of the pandemic is nearing its end.
According to Bloomberg, a team of doctors conducted research in a hospital where the first outbreak of Omicron was recorded. They analyzed data from 466 patients infected during the current wave of COVID-19, along with data from an additional 3,796 patients who had fallen ill earlier.
“The virus wave has moved at an unprecedented speed and has resulted in a much milder disease course than previous variants. If this model is maintained and repeated worldwide, we will likely see a divergence in disease and mortality rates,” the authors of the study stated.
It is worth noting that the Omicron variant was first identified in late November in South Africa and Botswana. The WHO has designated it with the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.
