Water Issues in Armenia Becoming Increasingly Concerning: 'Fact'

Water issues in Armenia are becoming increasingly concerning. Recently, Suren Papikyan noted the country's water scarcity, mentioning that the water flow of rivers serving various directions has decreased by almost 80%. He stated, 'This has led to the current water resources being primarily consumed, compounded by the energy crisis.'

Papikyan added that at this stage, not only irrigated areas are facing water issues but also those that were not previously irrigated, and the existing water resources cannot ensure their proper distribution.

According to reports from the 'Fact' newspaper, the authorities are currently trying to establish control and introduce clarifications, particularly in the field of hydropower plants, seeking to verify their efficiency. The main goal of the study is to determine how much energy is produced from the use of a certain volume of water and how beneficial the use of water is in that context.

However, we have information that the hydropower plants primarily being studied are those associated in one way or another with representatives of the 'former' authorities or their close associates.

Moreover, there is a second issue regarding the choice between water and electricity. The fact is that along with the increasing demand for water, there is also an energy issue, taking into account a series of circumstances, including the significant volume of electricity no longer received from Artsakh, as well as the non-operation of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant. Therefore, many experts believe that we are on the verge of an energy crisis.
