What Timeframe Can CSTO Respond to Armenia's Request? Deputy Foreign Minister Clarifies
The CSTO has a three-day timeframe to respond. Deputy Foreign Minister Artak Apitonian stated this today, May 14, during a conversation with journalists at the National Assembly. “Within three days, the mechanism begins to work. It involves urgent consultations among CSTO member states, during which relevant proposals for actions are formed. The proposals for actions depend on the developments of the events,” the deputy minister noted.
In response to a journalist's remark that the adversary had crossed the state border with 250 military personnel, and whether Armenia should apply to the CSTO under Article 4, the deputy minister said, “There was a need to start discussions with CSTO partners first to understand the procedures. It should be noted that this process within the CSTO has never been activated before.”
Regarding the appeal to the UN Security Council, Apitonian stated, “We have informed both our partners in the CSTO and the current chairperson of the OSCE, as well as the members of the UN Security Council about the situation.”
The Deputy Foreign Minister mentioned that acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has written a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that it is in progress but declined to provide details on the content of the letter.
