Yerevan Metro Operating at a Loss: Passenger Numbers in 2020
The Yerevan Metro named after Karen Demirchyan is operating at a loss. The press service of the metro reported to Sputnik Armenia that due to COVID-19 restrictions, temporary shutdowns of metro operations, and wartime conditions, the passenger flow has sharply decreased.
In 2019, 19,993,203 passengers used the metro, while in 2020, that number dropped to 10,747,551.
The revenue from advertisements placed in the metro's cars and stations has also decreased. In 2018, the metro earned 93 million drams, in 2019 it was 115 million drams, but in 2020, this figure fell to 61 million drams.
