Why Have Drug Prices Increased: ‘Jhoghovurd’

‘Jhoghovurd’ newspaper reports: ‘The operation of pharmacies in Armenia seems to have gone out of control. When the demand for a medication increases, the price of the drug skyrockets as well. And the most crucial point is that pharmacies are not punished for such unscrupulous practices. Today, a regular thermometer in Armenian pharmacies is priced at gold. Previously, a thermometer was sold for 500-600 drams, but now it costs 1200-1400 drams. When a consumer demands an explanation from the pharmacy staff, the typical response is, ‘Demand has increased.’

For example, the prices of antiviral teas such as ‘Teraflu’ and ‘Antigrippin’ have risen by 10-20 drams. Additionally, it should be noted that the prices of medications used for cardiovascular diseases have also increased. The only significant news is that antibiotic prices have not risen; however, let us not rush, as there is a shortage of certain antibiotics in most pharmacies. According to citizens who contacted ‘Jhoghovurd,’ the antibiotic ‘Ceftriaxone,’ which is used for treating several bacterial infections, is currently very difficult to find in many pharmacies.

Regarding the issue, ‘Jhoghovurd’ approached the Ministry of Health of Armenia, where it was conveyed that they do not have the function of regulating prices in the drug market. Meanwhile, the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition assured that they are studying the drug circulation sector. This suggests that a process is underway, but the Commission is still conducting research. The Commission is even conducting an online survey among consumers regarding drug usage. However, when the time for action will come remains unclear.
