Turkey Will Not Join the European Union in the Next 30 Years, Says Austria's Foreign Minister
Both the European Union and Turkey know that negotiations for membership will "lead to nothing," Austria's Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg stated to Die Welt, as reported by NEWS.am. He added that he does not believe Turkey will join the union in the next 30 years.
"For many years, Austria has been inclined to think that the already stalled membership negotiations should be officially terminated altogether," Schallenberg noted.
In this regard, the Austrian Foreign Minister referenced the European Commission's report on the progress of Turkey's relations, which indicated a significant decrease in compliance with Copenhagen criteria.
He added that instead of negotiating Turkey's inclusion in the EU, the union "should now start working towards a personalized partnership that serves the interests of both sides."
He also commented on Turkey's actions in the Eastern Mediterranean, stating that "Austria undoubtedly supports Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean."
"On the other hand, we must do everything possible to conduct negotiations," he added.
