Sunni Militants from Syria Refuse to Fight Alongside Shia Azerbaijanis, SOHR Reports
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has reported that Turkey is facing challenges in recruiting new mercenaries from Syria for the Azerbaijani army.
"It should be noted that Turkey is encountering issues related to sending new fighters to Nagorno-Karabakh, as many of them refuse to fight alongside the Azerbaijani army due to significant human losses and religious factors," emphasizes SOHR.
It is noted that fighters previously sent to Azerbaijan were unaware that Azerbaijanis are Shia Muslims. Upon learning this, a large portion of the militants returned to their homeland. It is known that most of the Islamists in Syria are Sunni.
The source clarifies that the total number of fighters sent to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone is at least 2,580, of which 342 have returned to Syria. Meanwhile, the number of casualties is at least 250.
