Relations Between Ankara and Paris Are Becoming More and More Terrifying
The relationship between Turkey and France has significantly deteriorated over the past month. According to Armenpress, the Russian news outlet Kommersant summarized the political and diplomatic confrontation between the two countries, stating that relations between Ankara and Paris are becoming increasingly alarming.
The media outlet recalls that France threatened to impose sanctions against Turkey from the European Union, while the Turkish Interior Ministry had previously banned the activities of the extremist nationalist group, the "Grey Wolves," in France, known for its radical actions both in Turkey and beyond its borders. In response to these sanctions, Ankara promised a tough reaction.
In an interview with Europe 1 radio, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian noted that the reason for these sanctions are Turkey's aggressive actions close to European borders, which include Libya, the Eastern Mediterranean, Nagorno-Karabakh, and northern Iraq. The minister emphasized that Turkey's actions are not well received by the entire European Union.
“We want to resolve our disagreements with Turkey, but in the past week we have crossed an unacceptable level in the relations between the two countries. We expect the President of Turkey to put an end to his offensive remarks and such behavior. We will not allow this hatred and violence to spill over into French territory,” the minister remarked.
The tensions between Turkey and France escalated after French President Emmanuel Macron announced a campaign against extremist Islamists. Following this announcement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on his French counterpart to address his mental health, while France recalled its ambassador to Ankara for consultations on the same day.
