Putin and Lukashenko Discuss Detention of 33 Russians in Belarus

The Presidents of Russia and Belarus, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, held a phone conversation during which they discussed current issues surrounding the further development of Russian-Belarusian relations. The details of the conversation between the leaders of the two countries were reported by the Kremlin's press service.

The statement specifically noted: “They expressed confidence that the situation will be resolved in the spirit of mutual understanding that characterizes the cooperation between the two countries.”

The Russian leader remarked that he is interested in maintaining a stable domestic political situation in Belarus and conducting the upcoming presidential elections in a calm atmosphere.

It is worth recalling that in late July, 33 Russian citizens were detained in Belarus, accused by Minsk of preparing terrorist acts and organizing mass unrest ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for August 9th. Those detained in the republic are believed to be fighters of the Wagner private military company (PMC). Lukashenko has demanded explanations from Moscow.
