British Scientists Report That Dexamethasone May Aid in Coronavirus Treatment
British scientists have noted that the inexpensive and accessible dexamethasone could help save the lives of numerous critically ill patients diagnosed with coronavirus. According to the researchers, incorporating dexamethasone into treatment reduces the risk of death by 33% among patients.
The researchers claim that if dexamethasone had been used in the treatment of 'severe' patients since the very first days of the pandemic, up to 5,000 lives could have been saved in Britain. The drug is low-cost, making its effectiveness in combating the lives of coronavirus patients particularly vital for poorer countries, which experience high numbers of fatalities.
Dexamethasone is a steroid that has been used since the 1960s as an anti-inflammatory agent. The World Health Organization indicates that its positive impact is only noticeable in severely ill patients infected with the coronavirus.
