Clashes Erupt Between Arabs and Police Near Jerusalem's Temple Mount
Clashes erupted on Sunday between Israeli police and representatives of the local Arab-Muslim community near the religious site of Temple Mount, located in the historic center of Jerusalem. According to RIA Novosti, citing local media, there have been injuries reported as a result of the conflict coinciding with the start of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which marks the end of Hajj in commemoration of the prophet Ibrahim's sacrifice.
This year, the holiday (August 11-15) coincides with the Jewish fast when Jews mourn for their ancient destroyed temples. Palestinian sources indicate that the police are using stun grenades and tear gas in their response to the situation. Concerned about potential unrest, law enforcement had previously prohibited non-Muslims from visiting the holy site.
Two mosques stand in the Temple Mount area, built on the ruins of ancient Jewish temples, and considered the third holiest site in Islam. Clashes around the compound have previously been a frequent catalyst for escalation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
