Sevan Algae Producing Toxic Substances, Expert Warns
The first head of the Armenian State Service for Food Safety and an international expert, Grigor Grigoryan, told reporters that this is not the first time that Lake Sevan has experienced algae bloom. He noted that similar signals were sent by nature last year, but sufficient attention was not paid to it.
Grigoryan emphasizes that these blooming algae can pose a significant threat since all algae produce toxins that can be extremely dangerous to human and animal health. Among these toxins are biotoxins and cytotoxins. Cytotoxins can kill cells, while biotoxins can cause death.
“It can be said that the current situation is a result of criminal inaction because when nature sends signals, immediate measures should be taken,” said Grigor Grigoryan.
He explained that these toxins can even enter the food chain. Referring to a demonstration organized by local entrepreneurs in the Sevan area, Grigoryan noted that these individuals have not been properly informed about the associated dangers.
