The President of the National Assembly has the right to participate in Security Council meetings
According to the newspaper 'Zhoghovurd', Anna Karapetyan, a member of the 'My Step' faction in the National Assembly, has initiated amendments to the law on the formation and activities of the Security Council. As is known, according to Article 3, Part 1 of the law, the members of the Security Council include the Prime Minister, the First Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Ministers, the Secretary of the Security Council, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Director of the National Security Service, the Chief of Police, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces.
Moreover, according to Article 4, Part 3 of the same law, other individuals invited by the Prime Minister may also participate in the meetings of the Security Council. When this draft law was discussed in the sixth convocation of the parliament, it received criticism from the opposition for the fact that the President of the National Assembly is not included in the Security Council, while Armenia has transitioned to a parliamentary governance system, increasing the role of the parliament.
Now, in the seventh convocation of parliament, a member of the ruling faction has proposed an appropriate amendment, seeking to enshrine in law that the President of the National Assembly has the right to participate in the meetings of the Security Council. It is noteworthy that the draft was presented to the parliament on May 30 and has not yet undergone examination by the departments.
