Veolia Water Implements Duty Due to Anticipated Heavy Rainfall

Veolia Water has announced that flooding due to rainwater accumulation is not only possible, but highly likely in Yerevan. The company's statement notes:

“According to the head of the meteorological service of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations, Gagik Surenyan, serious trials await Yerevan residents in the coming days. Today, especially after noon, and during the night of May 5, intense thunderstorms are expected, with hail in some areas, and wind gusts of 20-25 m/s during the storms.

In this situation, rainwater accumulation is not only expected but is highly likely in Yerevan. This is due to the fact that the rainwater drainage system was not originally designed for handling large volumes of surface water that arise during such emergencies. Additionally, in several areas of the capital, the capacity of this system is insufficient, and in some neighborhoods, it is entirely absent. The city's complicated topography further exacerbates the situation, as rainwater rapidly flows from the higher sections of the city to lower areas, increasing the load on local drainage systems. Furthermore, as rainwater collects and carries household waste with it, clogging drainage grates, it becomes clear why accumulations occur during heavy precipitation.

In response to this situation, Veolia Water is taking measures to ensure the regular operation of the rainwater drainage system. Specifically, duty personnel have been established, focusing special attention on the city’s most vulnerable areas; equipment and emergency teams are prepared to respond immediately to emergencies.

At the same time, Veolia Water urges Yerevan residents to avoid travel during rainy hours and to refrain from using personal vehicles to prevent traffic congestion and uncomfortable situations.”
