Over 11 Billion Drams Transferred to the Ministry of Defense's Special Account
In Armenia, a total of 9,985 citizens who evaded mandatory military service after turning 27 have made payments as required by law and have been exempted from criminal prosecution. This information was provided to Armenpress in response to a written inquiry from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia.
Since the enactment of the law titled “On Citizens Who Did Not Serve Mandatory Military Service in Violation of Established Procedure” on December 17, 2003, the inter-agency commission considering applications from citizens who did not serve has made a positive decision regarding 9,985 individuals.
According to the law, during this period, a total of 11 billion 81 million 46 thousand 100 drams has been transferred to the special account of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia. These payments are deposited in a special account opened for this purpose by the authorized state body in the field of defense.
The Ministry has also informed that these funds are being used to meet military needs, as stipulated by the Armenian government.
The “Bright Armenia” faction in the National Assembly has introduced a draft bill to extend the deadline for the operation of the law concerning citizens who did not serve mandatory military service. The proposal aims to allow individuals, who turned 27 by the end of 2018, the opportunity to return to Armenia, make the prescribed payment within the established timeframe, and be exempted from criminal prosecution.
