US President Donald Trump is ready to offer Iran the opportunity for peace negotiations, provided that Tehran agrees to cease fire. This was reported by the New York Post, referencing an American official.

“That is the basis for any negotiations. They start with a ceasefire, and the first step must come from Iran,” the publication's source stated. According to this official, Trump has made it clear that he wants to reach an agreement as quickly as possible.

“However, if the Iranians continue to strike at ships, American military bases, and US allies in the Persian Gulf, they will have to pay for it,” the unnamed official asserted.

The NYP source added that the Iranian leadership needs to “establish order among its ranks.” According to the publication, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps often carries out strikes independently, without consulting the country's civilian leadership. Meanwhile, the Iranian president and foreign minister continue negotiations.

The US and Iran are attempting to reach an agreement on a renewed memorandum that would maintain the core provisions of the previous document. Sources indicate that Trump continues to insist on ensuring free passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

From July 24-29, the US and Iran refrained from military actions after several weeks of mutual strikes. Trump announced that the parties are engaging in “friendly negotiations,” but after an Iranian strike on a US military base in Jordan, hostilities have resumed.
