FIFA President's Senior Advisor Resigns in Protest
FIFA President Gianni Infantino's senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro has resigned in protest against the organization's proposed commercial project. This was reported on the X social network by journalist Rob Harris, citing Cordeiro's statement.
FIFA aims to raise $4.2 billion by selling about 20% of the shares of a new entity to private investors. This entity is set to take over the organization’s media and commercial rights, including those related to the World Cups.
According to media reports, the shares could potentially be purchased by the fund of Joshua Kushner, who is the brother of Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
UEFA has announced that all its members will boycott FIFA tournaments. CONCACAF has also expressed opposition to the project but has not joined the boycott.
“I cannot remain indifferent when FIFA is considering the possibility of selling World Cup shares. I have had no involvement in this proposal and am vehemently opposed to it. This is a detrimental deal for FIFA's member associations, football, and the long-term future of the game. It should be rejected,” stated Cordeiro.
He emphasized that FIFA already possesses vast financial resources, with billions in reserves and no debts. According to Cordeiro, if national associations need additional investments, FIFA can support them from its own funds.
“After careful consideration, I can no longer continue fulfilling my duties as FIFA President's senior advisor. Therefore, I am resigning immediately. I hope others will also speak out, as decisions of this magnitude should be made in favor of football, not for the benefit of profit-seekers,” he concluded.
