India Threatens to Suspend Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan

India will not unblock the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty until it is assured that terrorism is not being supported in Pakistan. This was stated by the country’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a discussion in the upper house of parliament dedicated to Operation Sindhur.

“The Indus Waters Treaty will remain suspended as long as Pakistan does not definitively renounce support for terrorism,” the minister said. According to him, the treaty was “signed in good faith,” but numerous events have occurred since 1960 that have undermined the spirit of the agreement.

It is worth mentioning that after a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced the immediate suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Official New Delhi took this step after discovering cross-border links in the terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 26 people. Subsequently, Indian forces began Operation Sindhur, striking terrorist positions in Pakistan.

On May 10, both sides announced a complete ceasefire. Indian officials stated that the Operation Sindhur has been suspended, but not concluded.
