Misleading Advertising to Be Prohibited in Armenia
Advertising targeting children will be banned in Armenia. Tigran Markosyan, a member of the Armenian Competition Protection Commission, stated this in an interview with Sputnik Armenia, reminding that the main provisions of the amendments to the laws on 'Protection of Economic Competition' and 'Protection of Consumer Rights' will come into force on August 1.
He emphasized that this mainly concerns aggressive advertising, which also manifests in promotional phone calls and visits to consumers' homes. Additionally, according to the amendments made to the 'Trade and Services' law, misleading or aggressive advertising will be prohibited.
“By misleading advertising, we mainly refer to announcements about discounts on products, where, for example, under the name of a general discount, it only applies to a specific product. The legislative changes also pertain to promotions, for instance, when it is announced that a product is being sold at liquidation prices, even though the store is not actually closing,” noted Markosyan.
The commission member warned that violators of these rules will face a fine of up to 5% of their turnover. Depending on the severity of the violations, the fine may be calculated from the sales of any one or all products.
He announced that under the new legislative changes, the commission will have a new name — the Commission for the Protection of Competition and Consumer Rights. The new amendments will prohibit all types of misleading as well as aggressive advertising, including via SMS messages or phone calls.
