Changes in the Mandatory Military Service Regulations
According to the proposed legislative amendments, it is suggested to establish the possibility of serving in the mandatory military service for less than 24 months, with a one-month service requiring a payment of 20 million drams and a six-month service requiring a payment of 15 million drams to the state budget. This was stated by the Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan during a government meeting.
“The maximum age for mandatory military service will be set at 37 instead of 27 years. For citizens who obtain Armenian citizenship before the age of 18 or during the conscription age and have not served in the military in another country or have served for less than a year, the 24-month service period established by law will be replaced with a service period of 12 months. Additionally, a requirement to pay 2.5 million drams to the state budget instead of being conscripted for that period of service is proposed.
There are also provisions regarding the age of military enrollment for males who apply for withdrawal from Armenian citizenship. The state duty for submitting such an application is set at 15 million drams. The establishment of a reduced service period is proposed at 24 million drams for one month and 18 million drams for four months of service.
Each conscription decree will include the maximum number of applications for reduced service for that particular conscription and the procedure for submitting those applications,” said the minister.
