The Age Limit for Conscription Military Service May Change: Media
The age limit for conscription military service may change from 27 to 37 years. This legislative initiative has been proposed by MP Hayk Sargsyan from the 'Civil Contract' faction of the National Assembly. This was reported by the newspaper 'Zhoghovurd'.
It is also suggested that for male citizens under 18, the base fee for changing Armenian citizenship be set at 15 million drams. This is the amount that Armenian citizens who have reached the age of 27 and avoided mandatory military service can pay to avoid criminal liability.
The MP emphasized that many individuals in the country renounce Armenian citizenship before turning 18. Between 2020 and 2024, a total of 8,721 male citizens under the age of 18 have renounced their citizenship, according to the publication.
The justification for the legislative initiative states that the objective is to increase the number of individuals conscripted for mandatory military service, prevent a high number of male citizens from renouncing their Armenian citizenship, and reduce the number of male citizens who remain wanted until reaching the age of 37, among other issues.
