Over 600 people poisoned in Turkey
Nearly 650 citizens have been poisoned by chicken shawarma in Turkey's Kocaeli province, local authorities reported. Earlier, media outlets revealed that 300 customers from a shawarma shop in the Körfez district complained of nausea and stomach pain.
“A total of 648 people have sought medical attention in regional hospitals due to poisoning complaints, of which 646 have been discharged, and treatment for two individuals is ongoing; their lives are not in danger,” the statement said.
In connection with the incident, two individuals have been detained. Police have closed the shop where the shawarma was sold. Specialists from the regional Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have collected food samples for analysis and found that the shawarma did not meet safety standards.
