Trump Imposes Tariff on Armenia
Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on Armenia as well. This was announced by international relations expert Suren Sargsyan on his Facebook page.
“Armenia has not escaped Trump's trade war. Almost all countries have been included in the new tariff list. However, there are some exceptions, such as Russia. Trump has declared that a general tariff of 10% on all imports will take effect in the U.S. on April 5,” Sargsyan noted.
He explained that Trump has established reciprocal tariffs, meaning a mechanism through which the U.S. imposes tariffs at approximately the same level on countries that restrict their markets for American goods. This, of course, indicates a rise in the prices of Armenian goods in the U.S. market, which will affect their competitiveness. Certain key sectors may suffer from a decrease in demand, particularly the export of aluminum, stones, precious metals, agricultural products, and alcohol.
Regarding trade volume, it is estimated that total trade turnover between Armenia and the U.S. will reach $282.4 million in 2024:
• U.S. exports to Armenia – $160.8 million, which is a decrease of 14.8% (by $27.9 million) compared to 2023.
• U.S. imports from Armenia – $121.6 million, reflecting a decline of 8.4% (by $11.1 million) compared to 2023.
• U.S. trade surplus with Armenia – $39.2 million, which has reduced by 29.9% (by $16.7 million) compared to 2023,” the international expert stated.
Additionally, it should be noted that Trump has also set tariffs on the Heard and McDonald islands, which are uninhabited and home only to penguins.
