Italy Disagrees with Borrell's Statement, Says Foreign Minister
Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated in an interview with Corriere della Sera that he disagrees with the position of the European Union's (EU) High Representative Josep Borrell regarding allowing Kyiv to strike Russian territory.
The minister requested that Borrell's statements be distinguished from those made on behalf of EU foreign ministers and his proposals. The European Union is made up of different countries, each with its own legislative framework. Therefore, each EU member has the right to make such decisions independently.
"We are not at war with Russia," said Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Tajani announced that Italy is not changing its previously adopted stance. The country does not allow Ukraine to attack Russia with weapons provided to it.
"Borrell is speaking for himself and not on behalf of the member states, each of which has its own legislation and which, in fact, did not express their opinions yesterday," the head of Italy's Foreign Ministry stated.
The minister emphasized that Italy will not cease providing political, military, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. In June 2025, a conference under Italy's auspices will be held, where participants will discuss ways to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through peaceful means.
