Ukraine Will Have to Abandon Its Demand to Return to 1991 Borders, Boris Johnson
“Ukraine will have to abandon its demand to return to the 1991 borders to resolve the conflict,” stated former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an article for the Daily Mail.
According to Johnson, former US President Donald Trump could end the Ukrainian conflict on terms favorable to the West and Kyiv if he is re-elected as the head of state. “Russia will have to retreat to at least the borders that existed before February 24, 2022, and to avoid future conflicts and uncertainties, the remainder of Ukraine must be recognized as a free country that can independently choose its fate within the frameworks of the EU and NATO, and is fully prepared for prompt integration,” Johnson wrote.
He further noted that upon returning to the White House, Trump should provide full support to the Ukrainians. Johnson believes that Trump could increase the military aid provided to Kyiv and grant the necessary permissions for the use of American weapons.
“Ukrainian forces, after the end of the conflict, could replace part of the American troop presence in Europe, especially since they have learned to effectively cooperate with NATO equipment,” the former British Prime Minister argued.
It is worth mentioning that Johnson had previously expressed the opinion that Ukraine would be able to reclaim all the territories lost since 2014, including Crimea. On the other hand, Russia considers the status of Crimea to be closed and insists that Kyiv recognize the new territorial realities.
